Summer Habits & Seasonal Strains At Gozo Osteopathy
As the seasons change, so do our daily habits and at Gozo Osteopathy, we’ve noticed a clear pattern that repeats itself each summer.
With temperatures rising, many people naturally swap their walking, running, or other land-based exercises for swimming. While this is a fantastic way to stay fit and cool, it also brings with it a distinct shift in the types of issues we see in clinic, and mostly with neck and back pain
A Decrease in Lower Limb Issues
Interestingly, during the hotter months, we typically observe a drop in complaints related to hips, knees, and ankles. This makes sense, swimming is a low-impact activity that gives these joints a bit of a break. For many of our patients, this seasonal change provides much-needed relief from chronic lower limb discomfort.

But an Increase in Neck, Shoulder and Back Pain
At the same time, however, we see a marked increase in neck, shoulder, and upper back complaints.
Why?
One common reason is the way many of us swim—especially when doing breaststroke. It’s very common to keep the head and neck above water for extended periods. This creates a constant extension of the cervical spine and increased tension in the upper back and shoulders. Over time, this posture can lead to strain, stiffness, and sometimes even acute pain.
How Osteopathy Can Help With Neck and Back Pain
If you’re experiencing these kinds of symptoms during summer, osteopathy can offer gentle, effective relief. At Gozo Osteopathy, we treat the whole body—not just the site of pain—so we can address the root cause and help your body rebalance.
We can also:
Provide tailored warm-up and mobility exercises to prepare your body for swimming
Offer advice on technique to help reduce unnecessary tension in the neck and back
Help you understand how your postural habits may be contributing to discomfort
Swim Smart This Summer
Swimming is an excellent form of exercise, but it’s important to support your body with the right habits, especially if you’re swimming often or for long durations.
If you’d like some guidance, or you’re dealing with aches and stiffness, feel free to get in touch. A simple treatment session, paired with a few adjustments to your routine, can make a big difference in your comfort and enjoyment this summer.
